Starlink Battle for Atlas is an action-adventure game set in space

2021-04-15 15:52:20

Revealed at E3 2017, Starlink: Battle for Atlas is an action-adventure game set in space. It features toys-to-life elements not too dissimilar to Nintendo's amiibo that are used for in-game bonuses in Nintendo titles such as Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In Starlink, the toys are used to customise your starship in-game when you place them on a custom controller mount that is sold with the game, though developer Ubisoft Toronto claims you can play it without the use of its toys.

Consider Starlink to be a brilliant combination of No Man’s Sky, Starlancer, Ratchet & Clank, Vanark, and classic kids’ film Flight of the Navigator. Or to get real obscure with things (as if we haven’t already), it’s basically the ultimate modern reimagination of PS1 toys-to-life originator ZXE-D Plasmalite, with more spaceships and less mechs, obviously. Modular, scannable collectibles meet openworld galactic roleplaying, and make no mistake, Starlink is an RPG first and shooting game second. This beautiful quest is all about leveling up various skills, upgrading weapons and managing an ever-evolving army of helpful allies, all while a giant hunk of customizable plastic sits atop your controller. The battling is almost besides the fact, which is a little funny, because combat is really damn good.

The game is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One and can be played with cool collectible starships that attach to a mount players place on their system's controller. Through this mechanism, players attach and swap between pilots, ships, wings, and weapons at anytime during gameplay and whatever toys are attached are instantly reflected in-game. The physical parts, sold separately outside of the starter kits, are well-made and durable. They make for awesome toys or collectible display items on their own.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas drops you into the role of the leader of a group of pilots, before pushing you seamlessly through the galaxy, and on to a number of exotic alien worlds as the glorious narrative plays out brilliantly from the off. Without a word of a lie, you will find yourself fully immersed in this scientific galactic saga, getting involved with plenty of conversational opportunities to make new friends and relying on cold hard shooting to take down enemies every step of the way.

In Starlink, your starship can be customised as you see fit, which allows for freeform combination of ship parts. This includes wings placed upside down and weapons facing backwards. We wondered if this would mean players would be able to use their ships as intended or if the game would use it as an opportunity to teach players how to assemble a functional starship keeping the laws of physics in mind.
